The Real Question Isn't "Direct or Not" β It's βWhich Monthβ
South Africa is one of the more forgiving long-haul routes from the UK: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly non-stop from London Heathrow to Johannesburg and Cape Town, so you're not forced into a connection the way you are on some African routes. But direct doesn't automatically mean cheapest. On this route, the airline you pick matters less than the month you fly and how far ahead you book β get those two right and a "cheap" fare is genuinely achievable even in economy on a well-known carrier.
Direct vs Connecting: The Actual Trade-Off
Non-stop from London (British Airways / Virgin Atlantic) Around 11 hours to Johannesburg, similar to Cape Town. The most comfortable option and often not the cheapest, since you're paying for the convenience of skipping a stop on two of the busiest, most reliable carriers on the route.
One-stop via the Gulf or East Africa (Qatar Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines) Routing through Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa typically adds 3β5 hours of total travel time but can undercut the direct fare noticeably, especially during peak UK holiday periods when direct seats sell out fast and command a premium.
One-stop via Europe (KLM, Turkish Airlines) Amsterdam or Istanbul connections are a middle ground β usually a bit longer than the Gulf routings but sometimes the best-priced option depending on the week you search.
We work directly with all of these carriers to find contracted fares that don't always surface on comparison sites β worth checking before assuming the "direct" option is out of budget.
When to Actually Book This Route
South Africa runs on the opposite season to the UK, which changes the usual "book in the shoulder season" advice you'd apply elsewhere:
- Cheaper windows: January and September tend to price lower than the surrounding months, since they sit just outside both the UK summer holidays and South Africa's own peak (DecemberβJanuary) domestic travel season
- Most expensive window: mid-December through early January, when UK Christmas travel overlaps with South Africa's summer high season β expect this to be the priciest time to fly by a wide margin
- Booking window: for most UKβAfrica routes, 3β6 months ahead gives the best balance of price and availability; for South Africa specifically, push that to 6β9 months if you're travelling over DecemberβJanuary or JulyβAugust, since those dates also affect safari and accommodation pricing, not just the flight
Which Airport You Land At Actually Matters
Johannesburg (OR Tambo) is the busier hub and generally has more competing carriers on it, which can work in your favour on price. Cape Town is more seasonal β cheaper outside the NovemberβMarch summer season, pricier during it, since that's when most UK visitors want to be there. If your trip includes both cities, it's worth pricing an open-jaw itinerary (fly into one, out of the other) rather than a same-city round trip, since South Africa's internal domestic flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town are frequent and inexpensive, and it often works out cheaper overall than backtracking. See our full South Africa destination guide for more on both cities, safari planning, and the best time to visit each.
Entry Requirements Before You Book
UK passport holders generally don't need a visa for tourist visits of up to 90 days, but passport validity and blank-page rules for South Africa are stricter than many European destinations, and they do change. Always check the current GOV.UK entry requirements for South Africa before booking a non-refundable fare. Regional UK Departures
If you're not flying from London, expect a connection either via a UK hub (usually London) or directly onto one of the one-stop routings above from Manchester, Birmingham, or elsewhere. Regional departures rarely beat London on price for this specific route, so it's worth pricing a positioning flight to London against your local option β we can run that comparison for you when you get a quote.
Before You Book: A Quick Note on Timing Your Wider Trip
If South Africa is part of a longer safari or multi-country Africa trip, booking early matters more here than on most routes, since flights, accommodation, and safari lodges all compete for the same peak-season inventory. We've written more on this in our guide on how far in advance to book flights to Africa from the UK, which covers South Africa specifically alongside other safari-heavy destinations.
